As one of the seven state-level comprehensive transportation hubs in the Yangtze River Delta planned by the Ministry of Communications, Lianyungang boasts a well-developed comprehensive transportation network, and has formed a tri-dimensional transportation system that takes ocean line, railway and highway as the primary means while airway and inland waterway the supplement.
Lianyungang Port is one of the 25 major ports in China¡¯s coastal areas defined by the central government, one of the twelve ports functioning as a regional hub in China, it is the cheapest and fastest seaport for central and western regions, and is also the only large seaport in Jiangsu province. The port has 30 international container shipping lines, including five ocean lines to North America, America-Spain, Mediterranean Sea, Europe and Southeast Asia respectively, with 220 scheduled container liners every month to nearly 1000 ports of more than 160 countries and regions worldwide. There are also direct liners from the port to Japan and South Korea everyday, and the direct container liner to Taiwan opened in February 2006.
Lianyungang Port possesses thirty-five 10,000-ton class production berths, with a planned annual cargo handling capacity of 4 million tons, a large bulk cargo berth of 150,000-ton class£¬and a container berth of 70,000-ton class. The 150,000-ton class main navigation channel which is under construction will reach a water depth of -16.5 meters with a tide-rising water depth of -20 meters.
In 2007, the cargo handling capacity of the port reached 85.07 million tons including 2 million TEUs, which made the port listed in world¡¯s top 100 container ports. After operation over years, the port has established good reputation within the coastal areas in the handling of bulk cargo including aluminum oxide, fertilizer, food, coal, coke, aluminium ingot.
¡¾The Prospect of Lianyungang Port¡¿
The port now is accelerating the optimizing process of its collection and distribution system and the construction of large-scale specialized berth, launching the port-dredging-road (three roads in the east, south and north respectively ) construction project of the main port area, attaching importance to large-scale specialized berths including aluminum oxide, unpacked fertilizer, liquid chemical products and 300,000-ton class sea route, and initiating the construction of Great Dykes operation area and the port construction over the two wings.
During the ¡°11th five-year plan¡± period, the port will invest 20 billion yuan to construct 25 new berths, with a newly added cargo handling capacity of 46.3 million tons and 2.5 million TEUs, to upgrade the navigation channel class to 150,000 tons and above, and to strive to initiate the construction of 300,000-ton class deepwater navigation channel. By 2010, the cargo handling capacity will reach 120 million tons including 4 million TEUs, and is expected to hit 300 million tons with 10 million TEUs by 2020.
¡¾Port Layout Plan¡¿
Lianyungang city boasts a coastline of 162 kilometers, the only bedrock coast in the whole province with a length of 44 kilometers, and holds all of Jiangsu¡¯s 9 islands in her arms, which ensure the construction of 200,000-ton class deepwater wharf and above. According to the port masterplan, Lianyungang Port will form a ¡°one body two wings¡± port development structure composed of one main port area (Lianyungang port area) and five auxiliary port areas distributed over the north and south wings respectively.
The main port area is a core area focusing on the transshipment of containers and bulk commodities, it consists of Xugou, Miaoling, Mayao, Qitai and Great Dykes operating areas. Relying on the near-port industries, Xuwei, Guanhe port areas over the south wing, and Ganyu, the Three Front Islands(Qiansan Islands) port areas over the north wing, aim to become comprehensive port areas to serve the near-port industries and inland economic development. Ganyu and Xuwei port areas is specialized in transporting dry-bulk cargo, liquid-bulk cargo, general bulk cargo, and reserve the function of container transport for long-term development; while the Three Front Islands port area is specialized in transporting petroleum, and Guanhe port area is specialized in transporting general bulk cargo and chemical products. Along with the development of two-wing port areas, once conditions permitted, gradually transfer the functions of transporting bulk commodities, liquid bulk cargo to the new port areas.
