As one of the seven state-level comprehensive transportation hubs in the Yangtze River Delta planned by the Ministry of Communications, Lianyungang boasts a well-developed comprehensive transportation network, and has formed a tri-dimensional transportation system that takes ocean line, railway and highway as the primary means while airway and inland waterway the supplement.
 
   
 

According to the Main Navigation Channel Network Plan of Jiangsu Province planned jointly by the Jiangsu Provincial Government and the Ministry of Communications, a high-level main navigation channel network of about 3500 km composed of ˇ°4 verticals and 4 horizontalsˇ±, started its construction in 2006, will be basically completed by 2010. Lianshen Line (Lianyungang to Shanghai) is one of the four verticals, its mainline is 558.1 km in length. Tongyu Canal project inaugurated in 2008, will realize the sea-and-river combined transport from Lianyungang directly to Shanghai upon its completion.
