Lianyungang city lies between 34o12£§and 35o07£§north latitude, and between 118 o24£§and 119 o48£§east longitude, and is located in the middle of China¡¯s east coast, with a width of 129 km from east to west, and a length of 132 km from south to north, covering a total land area of 7499.9 sq km and a total water area of 1759.4 sq km. With its center part facing the Lian Island, backed by the Yuntai Mount, and embracing the port, the city gets its name from the mixture of above three names in Chinese. |

Situated in the transitional belt between the warm temperate zone and the subtropical zone, and affected by oceanic adjustment, Lianyungang enjoys a moist monsoon climate, with an annual average temperature of 14 centigrade, a yearly average rainfall of 930 mm, and an annual frost-free period of 220 days. Its prevailing wind direction is southeast. |

Within its boundary, there are more than 40 waterways, including large or small ones, mainstreams or branches, like Xinyi River, Xinshu River, Qiangwei River, Yanhe River, 17 of them flow directly into the sea, while Yanhe and other rivers link directly to the Grand Canal and Yangtze River. The city owns totally 168 reservoirs, among them, Shilianghe, Xiaotashan and Anfengshan boast big water storage, and the Shilianghe is the largest water storage reservoir in Jiangsu province with a storage capacity of 400 million cubic meters. The total storage volume of water resources in the whole city reaches 5.6 billion cubic meters, and its utilization ratio is 40 percent. |
At present, the total water supply capacity in urban area is 0.3 million cubic meters per day, supplied respectively and impartially by three water plants: Haizhou, Maokou and the No.3 water plant; and the total water demand is only about 0.15 million cubic meters per day that indicates a comparatively big surplus of water supply capacity. |

Lianyungang possesses more than 40 kinds of non-metal mineral resources including phosphorus ore, serpentine, granite etc., among them, Donghai crystal ranks first place nationwide in both deposit and quality. With a crystal deposit of 0.3 million tons and a quartz deposit of 480 million tons, Donghai county is crowned ¡°Crystal Capital of China¡±. Ganyu, another county of Lianyungang city, boasts a marble deposit of 5 billion cubic meters, a white marble deposit of 100 million cubic meters, and a sand deposit of 400 million cubic meters. |
¡¾Agricultural and sideline products¡¿ |
Lianyungang is an important production base of grain/cotton/oil, forest/fruits/tea, and domestic animals/poultry/fish. The Haizhou Fishery Field in the city is one of the top eight fishery fields, and is also a renowned base of laver production and Chinese mitten crab and prawn breeding. |
