¡¾Historical Sites ¡¿

Lianyungang was called Yingzhou in ancient time. In Qin Dynasty, a county named Ju was set up here, and in Tang Dynasty, it was named Haizhou which is used till today. The city has been referred to as ¡°Gigantic Town at the Mouth of Huaihe River¡± and ¡°Famous County alongside the East Sea (in ancient China, all seas in the east of China were referred to as east sea )¡±. Confucius once visited here to climb mountain and view the sea, while Qin Shihuang, the first emperor of China, came here three times during his inspection tours to east of four times, and erected stones here to build the ¡°East Gate of Qin¡±.

Archeological study shows that there were early human activities around Guju Mount ( today¡¯s Jinping Mount area) about some ten thousand years ago. In 1959 and 1978, two Paleolithic Period sites were found respectively in Erjian, southern foot of Jinping Mount, and in Daxian Village, Zuokou Town, Donghai County, which are the only sites with accurate stratum relation ever found so far in the coastal areas of Southeast China. Within the Jinping Mount area, there are 19 sites that belong to Neolithic Period. The Erjian Site is one of the earliest primitive agriculture cradles in China. The city has five State-Protected Cultural Heritage Sites.
